MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK AUSTRALIA

At a time when the fashion industry was tightening up, Camilla & Marc wanted to create a spectacle for the opening show of Merecedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, to garner International press and put the brand front and centre to support its overseas expansion. The client brief was to design a modern interpretation of the Australia territories, with one step in the past, a mind zoned in the future and a spirit rooted in the landscapes of Australia. It needed to be an emblematic celebration of Australia; its white sand beaches, red deserts and coal expanses.

In response to the brief, we designed a rich red oxide and sand landscape with a large central formation of boulders. Referencing The Devil Marbles, the landscape was almost alien and precariously placed, as if by the hands of the gods.

Tufts of rust and straw coloured native grasses surrounded satellite rocks, creating clearly defined pathways for the models. To create the red “soil” we ground up 60 tonnes of terracotta roof tiles and trucked it into the venue over 2 days. The result was a stunning and impactful show on a scale not seen in Australia for several years.
